Tight security expected in Zanzibar for elections

With tension growing over looming elections in Tanzania, police in Zanzibar have promised tight security for the tourism dependent island.

Zanzibar Police Commissioner (PC) Hamdan Omar Makame, said tourists and investors have nothing to worry about, adding that intelligence and security agents are on full alert.

The PC made the assurance in a series of meetings organised by the Zanzibar Association of Tourist Investors (ZATI).

Tourism contributes greatly to Zanzibar's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), bringing an estimated 27 percent annually.

Tanzania's government has worked hard to make sure the Zanzibar tourism sector employs as many youths as possible.

Youth unemployment is often a catalyst for civil unrest during African elections.
