British Army prepares to deploy more troops to South Sudan: Report

The British Army is about to have a much bigger footprint in a country experiencing one of Africa’s bloodiest civil wars.

The UK is set to contribute more troops to the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, according to a report by the BBC.

The British prime minister will announce details at a summit in New York this month.

The BBC reports that the mission will be significant, involve boots on the ground and go beyond offering logistical support and airlift capability.

The actual size of the British contingent in South Sudan, however, is not confirmed.

For months the US administration has been saying that providing stronger commitments to UN missions is one way for European Union nations to dispel criticisms from Washington about inadequate defence spending.
