Kenya raises security spending

With rising insecurity and terror attacks, the Kenyan government is increasing spending on the country’s defence, security and intelligence services.

223.9 billion Kenyan shillings (Sh) has been allocated to security agencies, out of which the Ministry of Defence and National Intelligence Service (NIS) will receive Sh112.5 billion, according to a new budget announced on Thursday.
The Government allocated Sh71.3 billion to the Kenya Defence Forces out of which Sh15 billion will be used for military modernisation. A further Sh6.4 billion was allocated to the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia.

In the 2014-2015 budget, the Government allocated an estimated Sh17 billion for a comprehensive CCTV national monitoring system, which will be rolled out in Nairobi and Mombasa.

The system includes a digital trunking radio network, central command operations centre, video surveillance system, and internet connectivity extensions to more police stations.
