China funds CCTV camera installation in Zanzibar amidst election insecurity fears

If you are travelling to Zanzibar’s historic stone town, expect to be watched.

With worries about insecurity in Zanzibar during Tanzania’s looming elections, CCTV cameras are being installed all over the tourism dependent town.

The project, funded by Chinese government owned ZTE Corporation, comes after a visit by Zanzibar’s Second Vice-President, Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi to the People's Republic of China late last year.

It is a 3.5 million US dollars investment.

ZTE says the project will be finished by the end of 2015 and will protect both people's security and the tourism economy for Zanzibar.
