With threats
of terrorism against Tanzania rising, authorities are demanding hotels lodges
and guesthouses in Arusha and six other districts start insisting passports and
official identity cards from guests when they check in.
The
announcement followed an emergency meeting of security agencies in the area.
An
investigation found that many hotel visitors use false names, identities and
fabricated places of origin, which is a security concern.
As a tourist
hub, Arusha receives over 85 percent of the annual 1.2 million foreign tourists
visiting to Tanzania every year.
In an
unrelated development, regional authorities are visiting colleges and boarding schools
in an attempt to ease the fears of students afraid of a terrorist attack,
similar to the one on the university in Garissa Kenya during which at least 147
were killed by Al Shabaab terrorists.
