South Sudan President sacks Minister of Interior and enacts controversial security law

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has sacked his interior minister, a previously detained state governor at odds with the Army Chief of Staff, and implemented a security law that essentially gives unbridled power to search, seize and arrest anyone without a warrant.

Aleu Ayieny Aleu was dismissed and Aleu’s deputy, Augustino Jadalla, will replace him for the time being as Minister of Interior.

No reason was given for the minister’s removal.

President Kiir also sacked Northern Bahr el Ghazal’s caretaker governor, Kuel Aguer Kuel. Northern Bahr el Ghazal state lawmakers impeached Kuel in February for misappropriations of funds and abuse of office. He denies the charges.

He instead accused his predecessor and current chief of army staff, General Paul Malong Awan, of opposing his move to fight corruption through introducing new regulations.
