Kidnapped UN contractors freed in DR Congo

Three subcontractors for the United Nations' anti-landmine service kidnapped in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are now free.

The confirmation came today from the United Nations.

The men were abducted last week from Kibumba in North Kivu province.

No specific group claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

Two of the men are DR Congo citizens and one is a foreign national, according to the UN.

The sub-contractors work for a private company hired by the UN Mine Action Service, which is responsible for removing and destroying landmines left over from decades of conflict in North Kivu.

The three men disappeared at a tense time.

According to the Congolese armed forces, Rwanda recently sent troops into North Kivu near Kibumba.
