Kenya suspends top anti-corruption officials

Kenya's top anti-corruption officials have been suspended following a nasty standoff with parliament after they alleged widespread graft.

President Uhuru Kenyatta removed the chairperson and deputy chairperson of Kenya's Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) after MPs voted to sanction the pair, accusing them of incompetence and abuse of office.

The announcement comes less than a month after dozens of top Kenyan politicians and civil servants were named in a damning indictment highlighting the scale of corruption in the country in an EACC report.

A total of 175 people were named in the EACC report, including five cabinet ministers, 13 governors, a range of civil servants, MP’s and members of the judiciary.

President Kenyatta had demanded those named in the report to step aside while the investigation continues.

Meanwhile Presidential spokesperson Manoah Esipisu claimed that even though the EACC bosses were now suspended, in no way is the work of the anti-corruption body hindered.
