Kenya: Parliamentary employee arrested over alleged plan to bomb parliament

Security agencies in Nairobi are on high alert following reports that al Shabaab was planning to use a parliamentary employee to bomb government buildings and other locations.

The other al-Shabaab targets include the University of Nairobi, Muthurwa Market, Nairobi Pentecostal Church, Holy Family Basilica and St Andrew's PCEA Church.

Yesterday police arrested the suspect, Senate staffer Ali Abdulmajid, after he was named in a leaked Intelligence report that described him as planning to facilitate attacks on the National Assembly.

Abdulmajid is the vice-chairperson of the management committee of the Pumwani Riyadh Mosque, which has been accused of financing terrorism in the past.

He was arrested by officers from the CID and Anti-Terror Unit at midnight on Sunday and booked at Kilimani Police Station.

Abdulmajid has worked with Parliament for nearly 10 years and has previously been named as being linked to terror activities - in the 2011 UN Monitoring Group on Eritrea and Somalia report.
