Fighting set to increase in South Sudan

A new report assessing the current war in South Sudan warns fighting between the warring sides will intensify as they race to gain ground ahead of rainy season.

A new report released by the Small Arms Survey’s Human Security Baseline Assessment (HSBA), said there were indications that the pro-government SPLA and opposition forces SPLA-IO were preparing for intensified violence in the next coming months.

The report says the SPLA wants to maximize the dry season when it’s able to transport troops and heavy weaponry across the country, as roads during the rainy season are not passable.

The document also suggested potential divisions from within the two warring sides and warned of further splintering or switching of sides.

The United Nations, U.S, U.K, and Norway have threatened to impose targeted sanctions on individual leaders seen to be blocking the peace process.

The sanctions would include travel ban, assets freeze and arms embargo.
