Russian backed oil refinery to open in South Sudan in 2014

Russia is stepping up its investments in South Sudan’s oil sector.

Russian ambassador to South Sudan Sergey Shishkin says the long awaited Bentiu oil refinery should open before the New Year.

The Bentiu oil refinery was scheduled to be producing by last July but bad roads delayed the arrival of equipment.

GOSS says the refinery, which is South Sudan’s first, will initially produce 5000 barrels per day with plans to increase production to 17,000 barrels of crude oil per day by the end of 2014.

The refinery is a joint venture between South Sudan's state oil company, Nile Petroleum and Russia's state-owned oil company, Safinat Group.

Russia also says it plans to finish road construction on a route linking Bentiu with Juba.
