Ugandan traders have taken the East African Community or EAC leadership to the regional court in order to block South Sudan’s entry into the bloc.
The Uganda Traders Association of South Sudan (UTASS) argue, in a suit filed in October before the East African Court of Justice, that South Sudan does not meet the requirements expected of states applying to join the EAC.
The traders also sued the Attorney Generals of Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and the Secretary General of the EAC over the matter.
UTASS Chairman Patrick Walusimbi said "We are saying before South Sudan is admitted they should clean up their house."
Walusimbi says South Sudan’s national, state governments and several influential SPLA officers owe members of UTASS fifteen-million US dollars which they allegedly have refused to pay.
