Several children killed by old mortar shell in South Sudan

Five children were killed last month following the explosion of an old mortar shell in Juba, South Sudan’s capital city.

A spokesman for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) says the five were digging through scrap metal when the mortar shell exploded.

The site they were searching was an old army barracks in Juba’s Souk Sita district.

The five victims were between 10 and 14 years old.

A Ugandan man with the children at the time, to allegedly buy the scrap metal, was also wounded in the blast.

Unexploded ordnance and mines are a long running problem in South Sudan, after decades of civil war.

In addition to unexploded ordnance left over from the war, there are accusations of new mines being laid in several areas around the country making road travel extremely dangerous.

De-mining and clear-up operations are under way in several areas of South Sudan, but explosions still account for numerous deaths every year.
