Jonglei curfew on vehicle travel - South Sudan

The government in South Sudan’s volatile Jonglei state is putting a curfew on vehicle travel after yet another fatal ambush on the Juba – Bor interstate road.

Four are feared dead and six wounded following the latest ambush which occurred near a village named Khormakuch, close to Bor town. Jonglei state MP Diing Akol said no vehicle is allowed to leave Bor town after 2:00pm. He is also advising travelers to inform police before departing.

There have been a number of attacks on the Juba – Bor road lately. Last week, armed gangs walked from Eastern Jonglei all the way to Bor town and blocked the road, refusing to let anyone pass. In a related development, an armed group ransacked stores of the United Nations in Jonglei state on Saturday and Sunday.

Beko Konyi, the coordinator for the state-run Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Pibor confirmed that a hospital and premises of Doctors without Borders (or MSF) and the premises of Italian humanitarian aid organization INTERSOS had been looted. An eyewitness working for MSF said drugs and other assets were taken. Many international aid workers left Pibor last Friday over concerns of possible attacks.
