Ethiopian troops take over command of AMISOM base after Burundian soldiers’ retreat following Al Shabaab attack

Ethiopian forces, which are part of the AMISOM forces in Somalia, have taken over the Leego military base after Burundian soldiers abandoned the base after it was attacked and 20 soldiers killed.

The Burundian contingent alleged it was a tactical retreat.

Meanwhile the Ethiopian forces have barricaded major roads leading to the town that lies in the Lower Shabelle region of Somalia.

Anticipating armed clashes between the Ethiopian forces and Al Shabaab, residents have been seen leaving the town since Tuesday morning.

Friday’s attack on the Burundian soldiers at Leego base was significant with a sizeable number of militants storming the base and an estimated 15 suicide bombers blowing themselves up at the main gate to the base, creating a passage for the other militants.
