Report: 6 killed at checkpoint in South Sudan’s capital city

Reports are emerging out of South Sudan’s capital city today of a significant increase in tension between Government of the Republic of South Sudan (GRSS) security forces and internally displaced people seeking protection inside United Nations sites.

At approximately 13:30 today internally displaced people (IDPs) at an IDP camp in Juba are alleged to have thrown rocks at GRSS security personnel.

A fight subsequently ensued, UN security responded and order was apparently restored.

Then approximately 2 hours later at 15:30 reports came in that 6 individuals had allegedly been shot at a checkpoint in the Jebel area, which is near to the largest of the United Nations IDP camp.

Tension has been reported in the IDP camps and people are advised to withdraw from the area until further notice.
