1 killed, 9 arrested in police raid on alleged Al Shabaab hideout in Tanzania

One person is dead and nine other suspected terrorists in police custody following a security operation in Morgoro, Tanzania.

Acting on a tip, Morogoro Regional Police Commander Leonard Paul says officers attempted to stop the vehicle of one of the suspects they had been following.

When the suspect attempted to flee, police shot him in the foot.

Members of the public, who were in the area at the time, then attacked the wounded suspect, lynched him then and set him on fire.

Police then raided the Sun Mosque in Kidatu division, Kilombero District and found 9 suspects hiding with explosives, military uniforms, weapons, and a black flag iconic to the terrorist group Al Shabab.

Police have identified the suspect killed as Hamad Makwendo from Manyasini Ruaha and believe he was hosting the other nine suspects later found at the mosque.

This is just the most recent development in ongoing terrorism threats inside Tanzania.

In February this year, a military officer was killed and five others wounded in a series of terrorist linked shoot-outs with a heavily armed group in Tanga.

And earlier this month, suspected terrorists ambushed three police officers at the Kilwa roadblock on the Coast Region killing two and wounding another.
